The unique benefits of water

Aquatic Physiotherapy differs from standard land-based treatments as it utilises warm water to aid rehabilitation for a number of conditions. As a result it has a number of advantages over traditional methods. These include:

Increased Range of Movement – Due to muscle relaxation stretching can be more comfortable and effective

Muscle Strengthening – Weak muscles are worked harder due to increased resistance of water

Increased Control of Movement – The water supports the body or a limb allowing greater ability to work on the control of movement

Pain Reduction – Has a beneficial effect on the nervous system to provide pain relief

Improved Balance – Both in sitting and standing, including falls prevention

Improved Walking Capacity – In terms of both movement quality and physical endurance

Reduced Neurological Tone or Spasticity – Through maintaining the balance of message signals between the nervous system and muscles

Increased Cardiovascular Fitness – Through various exercises that use the natural resistance of the water to provide a superb workout

These benefits result in overall improvements in a client’s functional ability, as well as improving mood and psychological well-being. Clients with varying conditions respond well to this type of therapy, and as a result Aqua-Rehab offers a range of treatments in the following areas:

“I want to thank Deryn and the Aqua-Rehab team. I had femoral nerve damage affecting my quad which seriously impacted my mobility. Deryn was able to quickly recognise my need to push myself to recover as quickly as possible and challenged and motivated me. Her support both physical and psychological has been a critical part of my recovery. The facility is clean and the team are welcoming and so helpful. I would highly recommended!”
